Bowled Over

It's time for April's Makery Challenge!  

Each month I team up with my friend and downline, Barbara Miller of Inky B's Journey for a challenge. 

We pick a set of products we must use and each make a card.  Today we are sharing both of our cards with you.

First take a look at the Challenge it's self.  

Here is the card I created. 

Fruit Loops anyone???

This background!!! I love it.  Here's how to do use the liquid colors on your Gel Press to get the background I made on this card. 

Put a line each of Candy Apple, Lemon Drop and Cool Pool Liquid Color down on your Journey Gel Press. 

Brayer over the color, blending them slightly to create a rainbow effect. Work quickly, as the color will start to pool up, which is part of the cool look you can get when using liquid color on the Gel Press. 

Quickly, lay your paper down to pull up a print.  Your brayer may still have ink on it, run that over the gel press again and pick up a second print. 

I picked my favorite print and layered that on to my Candy Apple card base. 

I stamped three bowls from the Bowled Over stamp set with Black Licorice ink and colored them in with Journey Color Burst pencils.  I wanted the top bowl to look like Fruit Loops, playing off the rainbow colored background of the print. 

The sentiment on this card comes in the Bowled Over stamp set, it's a classic that you could use with so many creations. I stamped it with Clear Pigment ink and embossed it with White Powder. 

For the finishing touch a tied on a stamped and cut out spoon with Licorice Twist Twine.

Isn't it fun to see what two people can do with the same challenge!  I love it! My favorite part of this card is something unexpected, it's how she used the heart punch to make the hole to tie the tag to the ribbon, so sweet!  And Barbara is a GREAT colorist, look at those strawberries!

Desk Top Index Card Holder

Do you like making cute things to give as gifts? Well, I have just the thing for you!  And if you find making boxes  to be a challenge, this one is for you TOO!  This is a very easy box to make!

It is an Index Card holder to sit on a desk. 

It makes the perfect teacher gift!  But you can dress up this little holder anyway you like and make it a gift for anyone.  A flowery accent and printed paper would make this a great Mother's Day gift! An entire pack of 3" x 5" index cards fits in it.  And you can usually get a package of index cards for under 50 cents!  Just add a gift card on top of the index cards and you have an amazing gift!  

Below are the measurements to recreate the Desk Top Index Card Holder:

For the bottom of the box: one 7-1/8" x 5-1/8" piece of card stock scored at 1" on all four sides

For the top of the box: : one 5-3/8" x 3-3/8" piece of card stock scored at 1-1/8" on all four sides. 

With out removing an pieces, cut on the lines in each corner of both pieces to create flaps for gluing the box together.

Simple and Small Things

Today I am sharing the last of my Small Things cards.  All four of these cards I shared this week were made for a video training I got to do as part of the Designers Showcase team.  It was a video on Texture and Dimension for other Journey Coaches. Todays card is a simple card, but you can still have a lot of texture and dimension in a simple card. 

My favorite part of this card is the white on white butterfly background.  It is faux dried embossed.  I die cut several of the butterflies from Whip Cream card stock and adhered them to a Whip Cream card front.  I trimmed off the edges of butterflies that were hanging off the edge.  

To make the focal image pop, I inked up the butterfly first on a Clear Pigment ink pad and then on the Denim Days ink pad.  I stamped it on Whip Cream card stock and embossed it with Clear Powder.  This is an easy way to emboss in any of your favorite colors, without having to buy a bunch of colored powders. To color in my butterfly I mixed Lovely Blue Liquid Color and Sparkle Silk and painted it on with a water brush. 

I wanted to repeat the texture of shine in this card so I added a hand cut banner from a Clear View sheet and used staples to hold it in place. 

I embossed the sentiment with the same technique as I did the butterfly. The white candy dots help to repeat the shine in this card.

Pattern Paper Mixing

Pattern mixing is popular when styling your outfits right now.  I don't know if I am that adventurous.  But I can mix patterns with my patterned paper.  For this card I used a print from the Through the Year (top of the card) and Designers Choice (bottom of the card). 

This card has a lot going on, but I wanted the eye to be drawn into the center of the card.  To achieve this I sponged the edges of the patterned paper with Oatmeal Cookie ink. It also helps to bring the two different patterns together.  I mounted my printed paper onto a piece of Summer Days paper.  The brightness of that paper can take over, so to soften it and give it some texture, I distressed the edge by going over it with my nail.  I closed pair of scissors works well here too, if the thumb nail does not do the trick. 

I also sponged the edge of the oval with the sentiment on it. Have only one layer can leave elements looking a little flat. Sponging the edge in a neutral color is subtle but also give a more defined edge, creating dimension.  

The last element I sponged was this paper flower embellishment. I was the very light yellow color.  I wanted to have a bit more contrast, so I sponged the edges with the Summer Days ink, bringing that flower to life.

I heart small things

It's true!  I love the Small Things stamp set!  That's why I am sharing a different card everyday this week with this set!  Did you see yesterday's card with the Gel Press prints? Today I am showcasing this set with a fun embossing folder, Heart You. 

 

What a fun embossing folder!  It really is magical to put your plain piece of card stock into a plastic folder, fun it through a die cutting machine and it comes out the other side with a gorgeous pattern pressed into the paper. It is one of my favorite things! 

To dress up my embossed background I used a strip of paper from the Designer's Choice print pack.  All things wood grain make me a happy girl. And this print with the blue washed wood is just AMAZING!  I wrapped it around the card front and tore off the end and stapled it into place. Then I stamped the sentiment from the Small Things stamp set in Black Licorice ink. 

The butterfly was colored with Journey Color Burst Pencils and covered with Journey Glaze. While the glaze was still wet, I splattered the card with Sparkle Silk.  Speaking of MAGIC... when Sparkle Silk hits wet Journey Glaze it spreads out and makes a wash of shimmer! You have to try it!

Small Things

I am always looking for new ways to "color" line stamped images. Like the butterflies in the Small Things stamp set. You can use pencils or ink to color in this butterfly and it would be gorgeous.  I thought it would be fun to use a Gel Press print!  

I actually used two Gel Press Prints for this card.  Here's how I made them: 

1. Cover the Gel Press with a Bubble Gum Acrylic Paint, using a brayer to spread the paint out evenly over the plate
2. Spray Journey Gold Splash over the paint two times, Lightly brayer this into the the pink paint.
3. Lay down the Linear Leaves stencil right onto the Gel Press Plate, then lay down a piece of Whip Cream card stock and press down onto the stencil, picking up a print.
4. When dry, cut the paper down to 3-7/8" x 5-1/8" and stamp the Vintage Notes over the top with River Stone ink. Then Splatter this with Gold Silk.
5. Remove the stencil and get ready to take a second print. Lay down a piece of Whip Cream card stock onto the paint covered Gel Press and pick up a second print.  Use this second print to stamp the butterfly image, once the print is dry, with Black Licorice ink. 
6. Cut out the butterfly, omitting the antenna and legs.  Glue this on to a butterfly that has been stamped on Whip Cream card stock and die cut out. 

I added a 4" x 5-1/4" layer of Black Licorice card stock behind my card front to draw the eye into the center of the card.  This is mounted to a Bubble Gum card; measuring 4-1/4" x 11", scored at 5-1/2". 

I repeated the use of Gold by stamping and embossing my sentiment in Gold powder. 

For more texture I added some satin ribbon and a bit of lace trim.  For the final touch, I covered the butterfly wings with Journey Glaze.

Shaving Cream background

Have you ever played with shaving cream for fun, to make art with?  It is too much fun, makes you feel like a kid again!  I have not done this technique in years and after making a card with this technique during the recent FSJ Presents event I knew I had to play around with it some more. 

Aren't they pretty!

After the video ended I made two more backgrounds, the orange and the purple.  The orange shaving cream background was done with Citrus Cooler Silk and Orange Rave Splash.  

The purple shaving cream background was done with Lavender Fusion Liquid color and Cosmic Grape Silk. 

Each of the butterflies was covered with Journey Glaze to finish of the card.  I think these five cards would make a great gift set.

Flat Card Carrier Bag

Don't you love it when you can use something more than one way?  I love it when I can use a die to make different things, other than just the intended shape. When I first saw the Card Carrier Bag die, I knew I wanted to try and make this gusseted bag into a flat bag. If you have not seen the Card Carrier Bag before, check out this one.  I have done just that, check it out. 

This flat bag started out with a couple Gel Press Prints.

I dressed up my flat Card Carrier Bag with the Magical Unicorn stamp set, it really is the cutest unicorn stamp set! 

I colored her mane with Journey Color Burst Pencils, covered that with Journey Glaze and while the glaze was wet sprinkled on some Sparkle Cuts.  The horn and the hooves were colors with a Gold Gel Pen. 

The bag is accented with Rainbow Drops, which has to be one of the coolest accessories I've owned.  There are SO many in the container I am not afraid to use them, I don't have to hoard them, I can create with them and make super cute things!!!

Donut Worry Keychain

I couldn't just make cards with the Donut Worry stamp set.  It's such a fun set I wanted to take it with me.  So for this week's Stamp Set of the Month project, I made a Donut Worry Keychain. 

To make sure that my donut layers were sturdy, I used a piece of very light weight chipboard under the donut, frosting and cup. 

I also added a charm to the keychain, using Shrinky Dinks!  They are just as fun as I remember as a kid.  But my heat tool makes fast work of shrinking them, no more worrying about them in the oven.  

To dress my donut and chocolate milk up, I covered the frosting and the milk with Journey glaze for a thick shine.

Image Transfer on the Gel Press

I am in love with my Gel Press!  What an amazing tool for paper crafters.  I love making my own background papers.  And I have to say doing Image Transfer was so much fun. 

You take a magazine print and lay it down on your Gel Press covered with a thin layer of black paint.  You let the image dry and cover that with another layer of paint and pull the print.

Peanut Butter and Jelly Card

 

Inspiration can be found in the weirdest places.  The inspiration for this card came from my daughter's t-shirt. 

I needed something cool for the peanut butter and jelly, so I made some custom glaze.  It's so easy to do!  You can find the video tutorial below, from my YouTube channel.

Get Together

Do cute little food things make you happy?  I'm not sure why but food related things make me happy.  Like the Get Together ATS stamp set, and the entire Sunday Morning collection in the Spring into Summer Catalog!  

It was obvious to me that I had to make recipe pages.  The perfect pairing of two things I love, cooking and crafting! 

Stay tuned, In May I will be offering Recipe Card Classes/Kits by Mail! Then we can share in paper crafting and cooking together.  All the recipes are ones that I love and have made with my family. 

These pages fit in a 6x8 album, in sheet protectors.  This is nice because you can just wipe off any cooking spills. So, stay tuned for more information about my Recipe Card Class/Kits by Mail.

Coffee First

Donut you love free things!?! Today I have a fun printable for you, and it is FREE! 

I wanted some fun sentiments to go with my creations with the Donut Worry stamp set this month and decided to make some of my own with some fun fonts.  I couldn't keep them just to myself, so they are available to you as  printable right here on my blog.  All the sentiments are in a dark brown font.  Print them on white or colored card stock.  Then cut, punch or die cut them out to add to your donut creations.  

I really wanted to pair my donuts with a die cut coffee from the Coffee first die set, just released in the Spring into Summer catalog.  Look how yummy! 

For my swirled iced frappuccino, I die cut the large cup from the Coffee First die set from a Gel Press print.  To make this print I bartered a few different colors of brown acrylic paint on my Gel Press and picked up the print with Whip Cream card stock. Viola, the perfect paper for coffee drinks!

Just think of all the fun there is to be had with this die set. 

I knew my drink needed donuts with it.  So I pulled out my Donut Worry stamp set, which just so happens to be my Stamp Set of the Month. 

The frosting is covered with Journey Glaze to give a realistic shine.

Donut Worry

It's a new month and that means it is time for a new Stamp Set of the Month! 

This month I am featuring the Donut Worry stamp set.  It has been a favorite of mine since laying my eyes on it in the Fun Stampers Journey catalog.  I just recently got it and couldn't wait to ink it up.

Yesterday was my first project video with the set and I am sharing that project with you here. 

I used the stack of donuts to create a background with Oatmeal Cookie ink, stamping it off on my scratch paper to make it lighter before stamping it on my Whip Cream card stock. 

To create the donut I used the dies that coordinate with the stamp set. I stamped the sprinkle stamp on top of the die cut icing.  I used a few things from the new Spring into Summer Catalog like the cute little face stamp, from the Sunday Morning stamp set, you can see that adorable set HERE. Also, the printed paper from the Sunday Adventure Printed Paper pack, which I thought went great with the little iced coffee image I added.

Now let's share something cute!  Today I am featuring the Sunday Morning stamp set.  I fell in love with this set the minute I saw it!  It features a Waffle, BACON, toast, egg, cup of coffee!  It is too much cute!  

I knew right away I wanted to make a diner inspired card and could not WAIT to stamp that bacon! 

First of all can we talk about my plate?  I stamped that little burst image around the edge of the red (Cranberry Bliss) circle with Whip Cream ink.  I love it because the stamp set comes with little extra elements like this and second, it is very similar to a plate that I have! 

Now, let me tell you the ink and card stock colors I used to create this plate of breakfast. 

BACON = card stock - Butter Cream, ink - first stamp the bacon in Raspberry Berry and then stamp over the top of it with Oatmeal Cookie.  You may not get it lined up exactly, but the little shadow of Oatmeal Cookie gives the bacon a 3D look, perfect bacon!  

WAFFLE = card stock - Pineapple Smoothie, ink - Pumpkin Bread

To finish off my breakfast, I covered the bacon and waffles with Journey glaze, I wanted them to really POP off the card.
