You might look at this Large Poinsettia stamp from Trinity Stamps and think that would be fun to color, but what else could I do with it???
Today I am going to share with you 3 ways to use this beautiful Poinsettia that do not involve coloring at all. Each of these cards has a vintage vibe to it and are special cards that are made not just with paper but with love.
It is best to see how these cards came together, check out this video to see my process:
If you can not see the video up on this screen, you can also view the video over on my YouTube channel.
Here's a look at each of the cards.
The moral of this card is a very famous proverb, Necessity is the mother of invention. When I masked off my watercolored Poinsettia I did not realize that the masking paper I used was actually sticker paper! That lead to my watercolored poinsettia being covered in glitter. I did not want to start over as I already had such a beautiful inky background. And in the end, I love how it turned out.
As far as the watercolored Poinsettia goes, it is super easy. I used Distress ink cubes in Fired Brick and Rustic Wilderness to ink up the stamp. Then I spritzed the stamp with water several times and stamped it down on to my watercolor paper. The result is this beautiful flowy Christmas floral. Then I masked off the flower using the largest die in the coordinating die set and "masking paper". With the flower covered I was then able to stamp the Encouragement Text background stamp around that. Which was inked up with Vintage Photo Distress ink and spritzed with water before stamping down. Then it was time for splattering. I splattered and ink smooshed Vintage Photo, Fired Brick and Rustic Wilderness. And after I added the die cut sentiment I splattered even more with some white acrylic paint.
Each of my cards has a certain feel to it. The feel of the first card is Christmas Fruit Cake, the colors just remind me of that colorful creation. So, I call it with Poinsettia Fruit Cake card. This next card is the Poinsettia Christmas Fireplace card. Think of the soot around the fireplace, where bits of coal have fallen off Santa's boots, but not into your stocking.
I just love how this card turned out.
It all started with a ink smooshed background in Fired Brick. Then I stamped the poinsettia over the top with Vintage Photo ink, spritzing it with water before stamping it down. When that was dry I use a fine liner pen and sketched out the poinsettia. The point is to make it look very sketchy, not perfect. I also decided to make the entire image be just the poinsettia and not have green leaves. It was very easy to sketch the leaves to look like more petals of the flower. Then I masked off the image, with actually masking paper this time. I stamped the same background stamp with Black Soot Distress ink and water. Then I did a bit of water coloring with the same colors of ink. Adding red highlights to the petals and a black shadow around the flower. White splatter finished it off.
I wanted to carry the glitter element over to this card as well, since it was an unexpected addition to the first card, why not challenge myself to add it to each card I was creating.
So, I used Black Mica flakes in the corners, I was a bit nervous doing this as the card has so much work put into it at this point. BUT, it really adds a WOW factor to this card.
This next card I call Poinsettia Christmas Postcard.
For this card I wanted to utilize the 4 piece coordinating die set and make a layered poinsettia. To color this up I used Distress Mica Spray Stains. Now, I know these are sold out and if you did not get these you could use Distress Spray or Distress Oxide Spray for this technique. After spraying you could add shimmer to it with lots of other products. I will link one I love in the supplies below, Sparkle Silk.
With my sprayed Peppermint Stick Panel and Tree Lot Panel I then stamped the poinsettia once on the green and twice on the red. I die cut them and layers them up with foam squares. For the center of the flower I used Flickering Candle. When you turn this piece in the light the shimmer is lovely.
The background was stamped with the Encouragement Text background stamp in Pealed Paint Distress Oxide ink. Spritzing this with water before stamping it, really gave it a glow! I then splattered it with Broomstick Mica Spray.
The glitter I used on the edges of this card is Tinsel Distress Glitter. And how about those Forest Fern Baubles, they are just the perfect embellishment for the card. All of the baubles I used are from Trinity Stamps and can be found in the supplies below.
I'd love to know if you have a favorite. I think mine is the Poinsettia Fireplace card. I am so proud of myself for sketching that poinsettia and I just love the look. But truly I had so much fun playing and getting inky making these cards.
